St. Jude announced today that it has initiated a clinical study of the Prodigy™ neurostimulator, which is the first SCS system able to deliver a proprietary mode of stimulation therapy called burst stimulation.
The purpose of the SUNBURST™ (Success Using Neuromodulation with BURST) study is to evaluate whether burst stimulation can be more effective in managing chronic pain than traditional tonic stimulation.
According to the press release:
A position paper was published yesterday by the European Heart Rhythm Association reporting on the performance of new devices for the treatment of heart failure (HF). The report has been endorsed by the Heart Failure Association.
The abstract for the paper titled “New devices in heart failure: an European Heart Rhythm Association report” reads:
Several new devices for the treatment of heart failure (HF) patients have been introduced and are increasingly used in clinical practice or are under clinical evaluation in either observational and/or randomized clinical trials. These devices include cardiac contractility modulation, spinal cord stimulation, carotid sinus nerve stimulation, cervical vagal stimulation, intracardiac atrioventricular nodal vagal stimulation, and implantable hemodynamic monitoring devices. This task force believes that an overview on these technologies is important. Special focus is given to patients with HF New York Heart Association Classes III and IV and narrow QRS complex, who represent the largest group in HF compared with patients with wide QRS complex. An overview on potential device options in addition to optimal medical therapy will be helpful for all physicians treating HF patients.

Medtronic released today its earning reports for the second quarter of fiscal year 2014, which ended October 25, 2013.
Medtronic states in the press release: “Second quarter revenue from Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) was $713 million, an increase of 4 percent on a constant currency basis in a market that continues to show a trend toward stabilization. Pacing revenue was $477 million, an increase of 2 percent on a constant currency basis.”
On related news from the release: “Neuromodulation revenue of $479 million increased 6 percent on both a constant currency and an as reported basis. Growth was driven by strong performance from Activa® deep brain stimulation systems, as well as the launch of the RestoreSensor® SureScan® MRI spinal cord stimulator in the United States.”
WISE (Wiringless Implantable Stretchable Electronics), a Milan- and Berlin-based medical device companyraised a seed-round of € 1 M to advance the development of its first product aimed at the spinal cord stimulation market.
WISE’s technology relies on Supersonic Cluster Beam Implantation (SCBI) for the metallization of polymers and elastomers. SCBI allows to fabricate complex microelectronic circuits and interconnects on stretchable and conformable supports that preserve their electrical performances after extensive cycles of stretching and bending of the substrates. The devices can be efficiently fabricated on biocompatible platforms, and are therefore suitable for the production of implantable biomedical devices.
Following Medtronic’s announcement in February of this year that it had introduced in Europe the first and only implantable neurostimulation systems indicated for use in the treatment of chronic back and/or leg pain that are designed for full-body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans under specific conditions, the Company announced today that FDA has approved the system for use in the US. Medtronic SureScan neurostimulation systems include enhancements to existing devices as well as specially designed leads to reduce or eliminate the hazards produced by the MRI environment. The devices also include a proprietary SureScan programming feature, which sets the device into an appropriate mode for the MRI environment.

“With the first U.S. implants of its new RestoreSensor® SureScan® MRI neurostimulation systems, Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) is introducing the first and only implantable neurostimulation (also known as spinal cord stimulation, or SCS) systems for use in the treatment of chronic, intractable back and/or limb pain that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for conditionally safe* full-body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) under specific conditions.
Start-up company Saluda Medical has been awarded $5M by Australia’s New South Wales Government to support the development of a closed-loop spinal cord stimulation system for the treatment of pain.
The difference between other SCS systems and Saluda Medical’s is that the latter – the Implanted Neural Sensing & Stimulation product (INS2) – is that it both stimulates and senses nerve responses.
Saluda was spun out of NICTA – Australia’s largest publicly-funded information and communications technology research organization – earlier this year after successfully raising an initial $5M in private investment. A new $5M grant was provided to Saluda from the inaugural round of the NSW Government’s Medical Devices Fund (MDF), a competitive technology development and commercialization program funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Ministry of Health.

Greatbatch Medical, which moved its headquarters to the Dallas, TX area last year, announced that it has set a target of at least 5%/yr organic growth. To accomplish this growth, the Company recently announced consolidating operations of its various divisions in order to create efficiency.
In addition however, Greatbatch is diversifying from being strictly a developer of implantable-grade components into a firm capable of developing complete medical devices. Greatbatch’s CEO Thomas Hook announced in March 2013 that Greatbatch is internally developing its own spinal cord stimulation system. The device, called Algostim, is nearing completion of development and will be moving into the commercialization phase. The company is looking for a partner to take the Algostim device into the $1.4 billion spinal cord stimulation market, which has been growing at more than 10%/yr.

Mainstay Medical was founded in 2008 by entrepreneur Dr. Danny Sachs. The company’s ReActiv8 neurostimulator is intended to treat chronic low back pain caused by arthrogenic muscle inhibition. This is a neuroprotective condition in which the brain reflexively attempts to limit motor stimulation and movement in muscles surrounding a joint in response to damage or injury to the joint. In patients with this type of back pain, an initial injury triggers this reflexive inhibition, and the brain tries to limit painful movement by altering nerve transmissions to the deep stabilizing muscles of the spine, causing a loss of motor control, an unstable spine, and greater susceptibility to reinjury.
St. Jude Medical and privately-held Spinal Modulation, Inc., today announced that they have entered into a series of agreements under which St. Jude Medical made a $40 million equity investment in Spinal Modulation, a company that has developed an innovative neuromodulation therapy that provides a new pain management option for patients with chronic, intractable pain.
According to the announcement, “the agreement provides St. Jude Medical with an exclusive option to distribute the Axium™ Neurostimulator System, developed and manufactured by Spinal Modulation, in international markets where it is approved for sale. Additionally, St. Jude Medical will have the exclusive option to acquire the company for up to $300 million plus certain revenue-based milestones following U.S. commercialization.
Boston Scientific announced today that it has acquired the fiXate™ Tissue Band and is launching it in the United States. The fiXate Tissue Band is intended to be an accessory to the leads/catheter component of Spinal Cord Stimulator/Pain Pump systems functioning to secure the lead to the fascia or inter-spinous/supra-spinous ligament. According to the press release:
“The fiXate Tissue Band is a novel suturing device that is designed to enable quick and simple placement of a suture to help secure a spinal cord stimulator (SCS) lead or pain pump catheter. Boston Scientific introduced the device earlier this month at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine in Fort Lauderdale. The product was purchased from Anulex Technologies, Inc.
Boston Scientific received FDA approval and is beginning a limited launch of the Precision Spectra Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) System. According to the press release:
“The Precision Spectra System is the world’s first and only SCS system with Illumina 3D™ software and 32 contacts, and is designed to provide improved pain relief to a wide range of patients who suffer from chronic pain. Boston Scientific, the United States market leader in rechargeable SCS devices exiting 2012, is introducing the system at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
